Of Our Time: Contemporary Art by Indigenous Artists from the Permanent Collections

blank one gallery

October 18, 2019–January 5, 2020

To accompany Monument Valley, the Des Moines Art Center’s Blank One gallery will feature work from the museum’s holdings by contemporary Indigenous artists. The title, taken from the Art Center’s mission statement, reflects our desire to acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous artists to contemporary art in previous decades, at this moment, and hopefully into the future. From the Pop Art-inspired works of Fritz Scholder to Duane Slick’s poetic reflections on prairie wildlife, this selection presents an array of subject matter and concerns, from historic conflict to environmental preservation. The exhibition will feature ledger drawings from the collections of the University of Iowa Museum of Art, offering contemporary takes from previous centuries. Works by Jaune Quick-to-see-Smith and Jason Garcia will also be on view, as well as suite of recent accessions by Kent Monkman.
