Virtual Summer Camps

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A VIRTUAL CAMP

Campers will meet via Zoom from the comfort and safety of their home. Each camp will explore a variety of visual art techniques and materials based on the camp themes. Virtual camps and material kits will provide students with tools and techniques that can be utilized for continued, independent learning all summer long. Students are encouraged to work independently while in camp, but adults are asked to remain available to provide art-making or technological assistance if needed.

CAMP TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Participants will need access to the internet and a computer or tablet with a webcam, microphone, and speakers. Instruction will be provided via Zoom, a web-based video-conferencing platform. A link and password are required to access the virtual classroom. A test connection prior to each scheduled lesson is encouraged to ensure ease of access and positive experience for the child. An email with special instructions specific to each camp will be sent one week prior to each camp start date. The email will include a Zoom invitation that allows registered students to log-on and join the camp.

To ensure a positive experience for all campers, we encourage students to enter the Zoom on mute and remain on mute unless interacting with the group. We strongly recommend having the video camera on to encourage the students and teaching artists to build relationships and have fun together.

MATERIAL KITS

Material kits are available for purchase through the Des Moines Art Center at the time of registration and will provide all the required materials to complete the projects during the week. Families will be provided a date and time for no-contact pick up at the Art Center before the start of the camp. Delivery of material kits is not an option.

A material list for each camp will be provided for those who prefer to gather their own supplies or live beyond the Greater Des Moines Metro area. To ensure success and a positive experience, each student must have all of the supplies listed for each camp. Studio staff and teaching artists will be using the listed supplies to demonstrate how to use the materials and related techniques; product substitutions are not recommended. Need extra paper? Add this option to your cart.

WORKSPACE

If possible, students should choose a designated workspace that can be utilized as a “studio” for the week. Though we have considered the home environment in selecting our material kits, please familiarize yourself with each camp’s materials and plan ahead to accommodate any mess. We recommend placing a wipeable table cloth or newsprint down before the start of each class. Finding a dedicated space will allow students the flexibility and independence to work on their projects as inspiration occurs.

VIRTUAL CAMP REFUND POLICY

No refunds for camps or material kits will be permitted.

one-week VIRTUAL CAMP STRUCTURE

On Monday and Wednesday, museum studio staff and teaching artists will guide students through creative games, art-making activities, and demonstrations. Tuesday and Thursday are left open for students to work independently on the art projects provided during the Zoom classes. On Friday, students will come together to ask questions, finalize their projects, and share their success with their peers.

six-week virtual CAMP STRUCTURE

Campers will meet with teaching artists via Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Instruction, demonstration, and work time will be provided each week during Zoom sessions. To get the most out of the class, campers are encouraged to work on their projects independently outside of the virtual classroom. NEW! 3 week pro-rated price: $100 ($80 for members). Dates are 8/4 - 8/20. Registration will close 8/2.
