Photography + Pandemic Parenting: Celebrating Cupcake
1/31/2021 / 2:00pm
One of the newest additions to the Art Center's permanent collections, Julie Blackmon’s Cupcake captures a domestic and slightly chaotic moment frozen in time. A rambunctious child attempts to climb a column with a Target bag in hand. In the kitchen, a baby is on the verge of screaming while being held by one arm. A second baby is depicted in the lower right corner as it exits the scene and races towards freedom. A child at the picture’s center returns our gaze with a mischievous “I’m sorry for what I’ve done” look. All this while someone rests their feet and allows their recently painted toenails to dry.
Parenting has never been easy, but the pressures and demands of parenting during this pandemic are immense for many. Join Erin Huiatt, Owner of Des Moines Parent, and Breanna Young, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, for a conversation about parenting and mental health with Museum Educator Mia Buch. In a one hour Zoom program, Buch, Huiatt, and Young will look at photographs together, learn about the artists who created the works, and share perspectives on how parents can best cope with the challenges of parenting in a pandemic.

Session will be offered on Zoom. Zoom link, meeting ID and password will be shared upon registration and a reminder will be sent the morning of January 31.
