December 2018: Michelle Johnson
on Tuesday, December 18, 2018
As part of the Des Moines Art Center's new My Museum Monday program, each month an Art Center member will be invited spend time in the museum when the building is normally closed to the public. We received dozens of applications to take part in this experience and are excited to begin sharing them with you.
When we asked "What would you do with three hours alone in the Art Center?," Art Center member Michelle Johnson submitted this response:
"As a dancer I have had the pleasure to do shows in art galleries and spaces for live audiences. I am interested in the interaction of improvisation and art when the implications, constraints, and expectations of performance are not attached to the generation of material. This opportunity would truly allow me to 'dance like no one is watching' as it were."
And she did! Yesterday Michelle joined us at the Art Center to respond to pieces in the museum through creative movement and improvisational dance.
