18th Annual Day of the Dead / Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda
on Tuesday, October 16, 2018
The Des Moines Art Center is proud to host the 18th annual Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead celebration.
This year's celebration will be devoted to the community that has supported our event for so many years. It is our hope that community members will bring in objects and notes to remember their loved ones to be placed on an ofrenda by the Day of the Dead committee, and debut during the celebration on Sunday, October 28.
Submitting an Item for the Ofrenda
In order to help keep the works in our collection safe, there are some restrictions on type of objects we can accept for this project. Items submitted for the ofrenda cannot include:
- Weapons of any kind, real or fake
- Food, flowers, or living material
- Glitter, confetti, or open flames
Objects must be smaller than 50 inches long and 36 inches wide. If your object is larger than this, please contact Community and Rental Events Manager Marti Payseur via email to see if your object can be accommodated.
If you are bringing a musical instrument, it is highly encouraged that you also bring the stand or case.
No more than 2 objects per loved one please.
All objects will be on display through 5 pm on Thursday, November 1. Objects will be available for pick up after 5 pm on Thursday, November 1 through Sunday, November 4 during regular museum hours.
The Art Center is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged objects. All objects, names and memories will be shared on the Des Moines Art Center's website.
We are so thankful for the community that has supported us for 18 years and are looking forward to engaging new guest with this community altar. If you would like to participate but our hours prohibit you from doing so, please bring your object on Thursday, October 25 between 5 and 9 pm as we have extended hours that evening.
picking up submitted items
All objects will be on display until 5 pm on Thursday, November 1. Objects will be available for pick up after 5 pm on Thursday, November 1 through Sunday, November 4 during regular museum hours.
After being removed from the ofrenda, objects will be alphabetized by submitter's last name on tables in the Art Center lobby. Please pick up your object and stop at the front desk to confirm you have picked up your item. We know how precious some of these objects are and we want to make sure that we do the best we can to return them safely to you.
If there any questions regarding the event, object collection, or object pick up please contact Community and Rental Events Manager Marti Payseur via email or by phone at 515.271.0301.
