Building Collections Collaboratively
Contemporary Collectors, founded in 2003, provides novice and experienced collectors an opportunity to learn new perspectives about collecting contemporary art. Designed specifically for those interested in building their own art collections, Contemporary Collectors is an educational program. In informal social settings, members of this Art Center affiliate group have the opportunity to view private collections, hear from expert and hobbyist collectors, debate the merits of collecting as an investment vs. a form of entertainment, and travel with the Art Center's Director and Senior Curator to the most exciting art events around the world.
Expanding the Des Moines Art Center's Permanent Collection
As part of the learning experience, Contemporary Collectors follow the Art Center's Senior Curator through the acquisition and accession process of a new work of art into the collection each year. This piece is funded with Contemporary Collectors dues. Currently on display in the Art Center's Richard Meier building is a significant work of art by American artist Richard Pettibone, purchased in 2003 with funds from the Art Center's Contemporary Collectors. In 2004, Contemporary Collectors helped the museum acquire James Siena's Upside Down Devil Variation, 2004.
