CURRENT POSITIONS


Position Title   Advertising Sales Intern
Department     Development
Classification   Part-time, unpaid internship

Overview
The advertising sales intern is in charge of selling advertisements to local companies for the 2008–2009 Des Moines Art Center On Stage concert series programs. Working with the development staff, particularly the grants and communications associate and marketing director, this position is responsible for all ad sales for both the first half and second half season programs.

Reporting Relationship The advertising sales intern reports directly to the grants and communications associate on all matters relating to the On Stage program ad sales. The grants and communications associate reports to both the marketing director and the director of development and external affairs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinates sales calls with advertising decision makers.
  • Produces weekly progress reports to the grants and communications associate.
  • Follows ad sales guidelines provided by the development department.
  • Gains approval from grants and communications associate prior to contacting ideal prospects.
  • Works directly with the Des Moines Art Center’s chief designer.
  • Meet sales goals as provided by the development department.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Understands and follows the Des Moines Art Center’s code of ethics and professional practices.

  • Conducts sales activities in accordance with accepted principles of sound business management.
  • Holds confidential and leaves intact all lists, records, and documents acquired in the service of the Art Center.
  • Makes full disclosure of all relationships which might pose, or appear to pose, possible conflicts of interest.
  • Acts in ways that reflect favorably on the Art Center and maintains professional standards in the quality of performance and demonstration of concern for Art Center’s collections, programs and facility.
  • Uses guidelines in AAM Code of Ethics for Museums, see www.aam-us.org.

  • Excellent public relations skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize work and operate independently.
  • Demonstrates organizational aptitude with respect to ensuring proper record keeping and follow-up.
  • Capacity for inspiring enthusiasm for Art Center overall programming.
  • Maintains professionalism, which publicly supports mission, functions, programs, activities, and policies of the Art Center.
  • Works effectively with Art Center staff and makes decisions in accordance with established policies.
  • Acts with discretion and maintains confidential matters.
  • Operates with a proactive philosophy of promoting the Art Center through any relevant opportunity.

Ideal Experience and Education

  • Two or more years of post-secondary education, preferably education in advertising, marketing, and/or communications.

Docent Program

Become a Docent and learn more about the world of contemporary art. A docent is a museum-trained volunteer who conducts tours of the permanent collections and special exhibitions for children or adults. The word "docent" is derived from the Latin word docere meaning "to teach."
