Bad Dreams
October 8, 2010 – January 2, 2011
Drawn primarily from the Art Center’s permanent collections, Bad Dreams presents the imagery of nightmares, from literal depictions of our worst fears to surrealistic visions that inexplicably conjure up anxiety and unease. Work in the show ranges from 16th century engraving to contemporary photography. By featuring work from multiple decades and cultures, Bad Dreams explores the constancy of certain fears across time as well as highlighting how they manifest themselves in the art of our time. Artists in the exhibition include Nayland Blake, Richard Bosman, Louise Bourgeois, Enrique Chagoya, Max Ernst, Anna Gaskell, Tony Oursler, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol. This exhibition is organized by Laura Burkhalter, associate curator. The concept was originated in part by former Art Center curator Patricia Hickson.
