Prints & People: Celebrating Twenty-five Years of Print Club

Print Gallery: May 10 – September 9, 2007
Blank One Gallery: May 10 – September 23, 2007

The Des Moines Art Center Print Club was founded in 1981 by print collectors, printmakers, and Art Center members who wanted to learn more about prints. Over the past 25 years, Print Club has supported the collections, exhibitions, and print-related activities of the Art Center in many ways. Print Club has offered its members and the public hundreds of educational programs on prints, including lectures, trips, and visits to artists’ studios and collectors’ homes. Through a shared love of art on paper, friendships have flourished. Over the past 25 years, Print Club has donated fifty prints to the permanent collections, including works purchased and commissioned by the club. Moreover, as individuals, Print Club members have given or bequeathed nearly one thousand additional works of art to the Art Center.

Prints & People presents a small selection of the many gifts made by Print Club and its members to the Art Center since 1981. The works on paper in the exhibition span six centuries and include nearly all printmaking media. Artists include Leonard Baskin, Pierre Bonnard, Alex Brown, Louisa Chase, Bruce Conner, Enzo Cucchi, Jim Dine, Gustave Doré, Richard Estes, Anna Gaskell, Winslow Homer, Donald Judd, Rockwell Kent, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Ludwig Kirchner, Rita McBride, Edouard Manet, Julie Mehretu, Salvator Rosa, Warren Rosser, David Salle, James Tissot, Susan Rothenberg, Allison Saar and Marguerite Zorach.

Prints & People was organized by Amy N. Worthen, curator of prints.
