David Chipperfield: Selected Civic Projects celebrates the opening of the new Des Moines Public Library, scheduled for April 8. The Art Center’s exhibition examines select public architectural projects recently designed by the British architect and his studio, David Chipperfield Architects, including the Des Moines Public Library, the Figge Art Museum (Davenport), and the third island for San Michele (the cemetery island of Venice).

Chipperfield and his London- and Berlin-based design teams are internationally acclaimed for visually rich minimalist forms, innovative use of building materials, and collaborative problem-solving. The clear, elegant architectural volumes, forms, and spaces they design result from a rigorous and essential aesthetic vision and thoughtful analysis of functional and social requirements. Amy N. Worthen, curator of prints, organized this exhibition.

Keith Achepohl
The Business of Being Piranesi

Keith Achepohl, professor emeritus of printmaking at the University of Iowa, will speak on the 18th-century Italian printmaker, Giambattista Piranesi, who is known for his extraordinary etchings of the ruins and monuments of Rome. Achepohl, who has collected and studied Piranesi’s prints over a lifetime, will present new insights into the life and work of this fascinating artist. A reception for Achepohl, hosted by Print Club, will follow in the Art Center Restaurant.
