The 57th installment of the Art Center’s annual Iowa Artists series takes the form of an invitational exhibition with three concurrent one-person shows featuring artists Charlotte Cain of Fairfield, George Lowe of Decorah, and Susan Chrysler White of Iowa City.

Charlotte Cain’s small and delicate works on paper refer to Hindu ritual iconography as well as the fabric design, architectural ornamentation, and painted miniatures of India. At once tightly controlled, yet intuitive and emotional, her intimate paintings and drawings transcend their materials and allude to imaginary worlds.

Ceramic artist George Lowe produces straightforward, utilitarian clay forms, such as pitchers, vessels, and jars. Basic and simple, but beautiful, Lowe’s work follows in the traditions of potters who steadfastly adhere to a belief that form follows function.

Susan Chrysler White’s vibrantly colored, large-scale acrylic and enamel paintings seduce the eye. Bilateral Rorschach-like imagery dominates compositions that alternately read as dynamic abstract patterns and then glorious collages of various organic forms and figures—Buddhas, moths, insects, and flowers.
