Bad Dreams

Bad Dreams shows us the dark corners of the sleeping
subconscious, and defines the worst fears our waking
minds can imagine. Drawn primarily from the Art Center’s
permanent collection, Bad Dreams presents the imagery
of these nightmares. Using ink, paint, plastic, wood, and
other materials, the artists in this exhibition give life to
things that go bump in the night. Some works present
straightforward images of horror – vampires, cannibals,
chunks of flesh – while others function more
psychologically, invoking feelings of unease and paranoia. Work in the show ranges
from 16th-century engraving to contemporary photography. By featuring work from
multiple centuries and cultures, Bad Dreams explores the constancy of certain fears
across time. Artists in the exhibition include Richard Bosman, Louise Bourgeois,
Pieter Brueghel, Enrique Chagoya, Edvard Munch, Tony Oursler, Cindy Sherman, and
Andy Warhol. The exhibition is organized by Laura Burkhalter, associate curator.
