THE DES MOINES ART CENTER PRESENTS
THE ART OF FASHION
SEPTEMBER 13 – 20, 2014
Plans are already afoot to make 2014 a memorable fundraising year for the Des Moines Art Center.
The wise heads and creative talents of Des Moines' leading citizens, Art Center staff, and youthful
volunteers have started to organize a week-long, city-wide celebration of fashion and art. Scheduled
for September 13 – 20, 2014, the event will engage a wide range of the community in a series of
entirely unexpected events and programs, all emanating from the city's leading art and cultural
institution, the Des Moines Art Center.
The Art of Fashion theme was prompted by the exciting traveling exhibition that will be on view at the
Art Center, featuring the work of Andy Warhol and Halston (organized by The Andy Warhol Foundation
for the Visual Arts). What makes the exhibition so special for Des Moines, is the fact that Halston was
born in this city, and years later, having achieved well-deserved fame as a visionary fashion designer,
he donated many of the works he had acquired by Warhol to the Des Moines Art Center.
While plans are still evolving, here is a taste of what the week may include: Downtown fashion flash mob,
shop window displays of fashion-inspired art, pop-up boutiques, fashion film fest, fashion-design classes
and workshops for young people, a fundraising vintage couture auction via well-known Chicago auction
house Leslie Hindman, people-dress-their-pets parade, projection mapping, style trend predictions, a
ticketed luncheon with runway show, and guest speakers. We envision myriad opportunities for community
involvement. Topping off the fashion-as-art focused week will be the annual Art Center Gala – a black-tie affair.
