Summer Day Camps

Extraordinary Adventures

Join CampFire USA, The Des Moines Playhouse, the Des Moines Art Center, Fort Des Moines Museum, Iowa Gold Star Museum, Living History Farms, the Botanical Center, and the State Historical Society for four days of exciting activities. Camp is based at the CampFire center, and we travel to other sites throughout the week. A variety of drop-off and pick-up locations is available. The Des Moines Art Center and Playhouse Proudly Present!

Come be a part of the excitement of the plays Three Billy Goats Gruff, Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Aesop’s Fables, or Fables ’Round the World. Mornings at The Playhouse, rehearse and perform the play. In the afternoons at the Art Center, design and paint backdrops, props, and masks for the play. Invite your family and friends to the performance on Friday morning. Students should be brought to the Playhouse in the morning and picked up at the Art Center in the afternoon. After lunch at the Playhouse, the participants ride a chartered bus to the Art Center. Altered Art Camp

Invent ways to make old objects into creative works of art. Combine pop-up and collage techniques to transform a used book into your own creation. Playing cards are made into artists’ trading cards. Recycle old bottles and cans by turning them into unique containers. Make wearable art using old clothes and fabrics.

Celebrate 60

Go back in time sixty years and learn a brief history of the Art Center. Enjoy listening to stories about favorite works in the collections and the artist who created them. In the studios make paintings and sculptures in various artistic styles influenced by art collected since the 1940s.
