DRAWING

Beginning and Intermediate Drawing

Using pencil or charcoal, learn basic techniques and elements of composition, value contrasts, and line variations. Still life with an emphasis on realism is the subject matter of your drawings. This class is a recommended prerequisite for students who want to study painting, watercolor, or figure drawing. Students who have previously taken the course are invited to join the class for advanced instruction and an opportunity to work on self-directed projects.

PRINTMAKING

Printmaking with Light-Sensitive Polymer Plates

Pencil, ink, paint, photocopied objects, and good contrast photographs can be used to create images that can be exposed to polymer plates. Intaglio inking techniques, combined with relief/intaglio printing, and chine collι are presented. Bring image concepts, a drawing pen, and ink.

Found Object Jewelry: Atypical Adornments

From found objects to fabulous jewelry, create one-of-a-kind wearable works of art. Bring your treasures, trinkets, odds and ends to class and create delightful bracelets, pendants, and pins. Learn the basic techniques of cutting, filing, bending, and soldering with silver or copper.

Lost Wax Casting

Make a ring or pendant using the ancient process of lost wax casting. Begin by carving a wax cast and investing it in mold material. Burn it out and replace it with molten material by means of centrifugal casting. An exact replica of the wax model is created in silver.

Stained-Glass Design

Capture the beauty of light and colored glass. In this class you can make a lampshade, kaleidoscope, or suncatcher. Both leaded and foiled stained-glass techniques are explored. Teens are welcome.

Mosaics

This ancient technique is often considered painting without paint, the execution of designs by setting small tiles into wet grout. Using broken tile, ceramics, and/or found objects, design and make a project of your choice. Teens are welcome.

Surface Design on Fabric

Using a variety of surface-design techniques, create yardage to make original scarves, tote bags, and simple clothing. Learn direct painting techniques, relief printing, dying and discharging, and silk-screen processes. Teens are welcome.

Glass Bead Making

Lampwork bead making is the process of shaping glass rods in the molten state over a torch to create amazing, distinctive, wearable glass beads. Studio setup, safety equipment, and multiple bead-working techniques are presented.

CERAMICS

The Art Center’s ceramics studio provides the beginning ceramics student with the needed equipment for a successful learning experience. In addition, the Art Center offers an expanded program of ceramics studio classes held off-site at RDG Dahlquist Art Studio, located in the Art 316 Building at 316 SW 5th Street in downtown Des Moines, just south of Court Avenue. This program offers more open studio time and provides additional materials and equipment for the student.

Introduction to Ceramics

This class is designed to help you learn the fundamental techniques of hand building, wheel throwing, and raku ware. This is an opportunity to expand your knowledge of clay, slip, and glaze solutions.

Foundational and Flourishing

This class is for both introductory as well as intermediate students. Beginners focus on the basic foundational alphabet while intermediate students can apply foundational lettering to projects suitable for framing. The basics of flourishing are covered and students combine traditional calligraphy techniques with contemporary designs. Flourishing is done with pens, pencils, and brushes.

ART APPRECIATION

Art and Architecture: Art Appreciation

How does a museum’s design affect how artwork is displayed and appreciated? How does the design of an artist’s workshop influence the art that they create? What happens when artists create architecture? This three week lecture series will address these questions while examining famous museums and their collections, prominent artists’ studios, and also “architecture” created by artists. Discussion will include the Des Moines Art Center building and its collection along with other examples across history, styles and cultures.
