On the Second Saturday of each month, the Art Center invites children along with an adult companion to learn more about art through a variety of cool activities in the museum.

smART Family Workshops
Family workshops are designed for parents and children ages 5 and older. (Please plan for each adult to work with no more than two children.) All materials are furnished except where noted.
Please pre-register and prepay by calling the Education department at 515.271.0306 by the Wednesday prior to the workshop.

FLOURISHING FLOWERS
Choose bright and bold watercolors to create a beautiful and imaginative flower painting. Learn to paint in ways that are special to watercolor.

SCULPTURE PARK SKETCHES
Come view and learn about some of the sculptures at the new Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines. Sketch some of your favorites on postcards and add color with watercolors. Meet at the donor wall at the parks entrance on the corner of 13th and Grand. This program takes place rain or shine.

THE COSTUME MODEL
What do a ballerina, grumpy siblings, and an aristocrat have in common? They are the subjects of paintings in the museum. Visit these works in the museum, then return to a studio and use these paintings as inspiration as you create a pastel drawing of a model in an unusual costume.

PEACE BIRDS
The white dove became a popular sign of peace when Pablo Picasso created a lithograph for the International Peace Conference. The dove, the paper cranes, and other birds are used as symbols of peace. Use special folding and cutting techniques to create a bird and send a message of peace to a loved one.

DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION
Join our seventh annual Day of the Dead Celebration. Decorate sugar skulls and create a letter to the dead. This holiday remembers people who have died and celebrates their lives. Visit the altar in the lobby and enjoy the music and festivities beginning at 1 pm.
