smART Family Weekends are:

• Second Sunday Family Workshops
• Fun for the whole family!

smART Family Second Saturday Programs:

• On the Second Saturday of each month, the Art Center invites children along with an adult companion to learn more about art through a variety of cool activities.
• Please join us for a family activity that begins in the lobby at 10:15am and ends at 11:15am. All sessions are FREE.
• Advanced registration is required for each Second Saturday program. Please contact Jennifer Cooley at 515.271.0328 or jcooley@desmoinesartcenter.org.
• Each session has a limited number of participants (which includes children and adults) and places are secured by advanced reservation only.

Second Saturday Schedule

January 9 – The Writing on the Wall

• Ages 8-12
• Limited to 10 people
• Families will walk around the galleries and look at artworks that contain words and letters. After exploring the different way artists use lettering in their artwork, the group will work with a calligrapher to explore artistic ways to create letters.

February 13 – Drawing in the Galleries

• Ages 8-12
• Limited to 10 people
• Families will learn more about one of America’s favorite artists while viewing the Edward Hopper: Images and Influence exhibition. After discussing Hopper’s artwork, families will learn observation and drawing fundamentals while sketching their own work of art.

March 13 –Museum Detectives

• Ages 7-12
• Limited to 20 people
• Families will work together to uncover hidden or unexpected details in artworks. Then everyone will share their responses with the group.
