Registration

You are encouraged to register online to ensure an immediate reservation in a class.

While we cannot guarantee an opening in your desired class, you may also complete the registration
form in the class schedule brochure and mail, fax or hand-deliver with tuition plus applicable membership
and material fee(s) to:

  • Class enrollment is taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Registration is complete when we are in receipt of FULL payment.
  • CONFIRMATIONS ARE SENT VIA EMAIL.
  • If a student enrolls in a class with the instructor’s approval after the session has
    begun, full tuition is still required. Tuition is not prorated.
  • All classes are held at the Des Moines Art Center, 4700 Grand Avenue unless
    otherwise indicated.

Our website allows visitors to view the current class schedule, register for classes, and view
updated class availability.


Membership

Members receive a 20% discount on the cost of tuition and enjoy benefits all year! Membership
helps support the museum’s operations and programs. Memberships are nonrefundable. Discounted
tuition on child enrollment is available only with a household-level membership or higher.


Class Availability

  • Full class: If the class you would like to take is full, you may register online to be placed on a waiting list.
  • Low enrollment: Please do not wait until the last minute to register. The Art Center reserves the right to
    cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment without incurring obligation.


Refunds

All transfers and refunds must take place no later than seven days before the class start date.
No refunds or transfers may be made less than seven days before the class begins. A $15
processing fee will be charged for all refunds after payments are processed, regardless of
reason for cancellation. Model fees are non-refundable within seven days of the start date.
No credits are given.


Makeup Class

If a student is unable to attend a class period for any reason, the Art Center is not responsible
for providing any makeup sessions. The Art Center reserves the right to change instructors or
to discontinue any class without incurring obligations.


Weather Cancellation Policy

The Art Center may cancel classes due to severe weather or other variables. Check KCCI TV-8,
WHO Radio 1040, or the Art Center website for cancellation details. Cancelled classes are rescheduled.


Materials and Supplies

Please check course descriptions for possible model or material fees. Students in adult
classes are responsible for providing their supplies. Most materials for children’s classes
are furnished by the Art Center.


Staff Development and College Credit

Staff development credit is available through Heartland AEA for selected classes.
An additional fee is required, payable to Heartland AEA. One hour of credit is given
for 15 hours of instruction. Students may enroll for staff development credit on the
first day of class. Call 515.271.0306 for more information. Some courses qualify for
college credit from area colleges. Interested students should register with their college
prior to registration at the Art Center.


Arrival and Departure

Children should arrive no more than 10 minutes prior to the start of classes. Parents are
asked to pick up their children promptly at the end of each class.

A parent/legal guardian must accompany the child to his/her designated studio and see that
a staff member takes charge of the child. At departure time, the parent/legal guardian must
pick up the child from his/her studio.

In the case of an emergency or delay, please notify the Art Center at 515.271.0316. If you
intend to pick up your child before the end of class, call 515.271.0316.


Photography

The Art Center occasionally documents the classes using photography or video for promotional
purposes. Please fill out the photography permission section on the class registration form. If you
do not want yourself or your child photographed, please notify the Art Center in writing.


Artwork Storage

The Art Center is not responsible for storing student work. All work will be discarded if not retrieved
within one month of student show closing.


No Guests in Studios

Only registered participants may attend classes. Siblings and guests are not allowed in the studios.
If you feel that your child is unable to remain in the studio without you, please wait another semester
before registering him/her for art class.
