Art Noir + PechaKucha Night Des Moines: Q&A with Assistant Curator Jared Ledesma
on Tuesday, August 29, 2017
Want a sneak peek at PechaKucha Night Des Moines: Volume 30?
Check out Art Noir's quick Q&A with presenter and Art Center Assistant Curator Jared Ledesma.
Art Noir: What's the title of your PKN presentation?
Jared Ledesma: The title is “What’s Up with Those Rings?”.
AN: Can you give us a quick synopsis?
JL: The presentation is focused on a work of art by Felix Gonzalez-Torres in the Art Center’s permanent collections. The piece is composed of two brass rings that hang side by side. I’m a specialist in Gonzelez-Torres' work and since I’ve arrived in Des Moines in late March I’ve been asked repeatedly about the piece and its meaning. I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the work and thought it would be wonderful to do so in the PKN format.
AN: How did you narrow-down your visuals? [The PechaKucha presentation style allows for 20 slides show for 20 seconds each.]
JL: In the art history world, a lecture is typically composed of all images and no text, so that was to my advantage. I specifically chose images that relate to the theme of the artwork.
AN: Why did you volunteer to present at tonight's PKN?
JL: I was asked to present and more than willingly agreed. I’m excited for the experience and I think it will be a fantastic way for people to understand a piece of work in the Art Center’s collection.
AN: Have you presented in the PKN format before? How are you feeling leading up to the event?
JL: This will be my first time, and I’m excited to see what other people are presenting on. I'm looking forward to it!
See Jared's presentation “What’s Up with Those Rings?”—plus presentations ranging from “The Power of Classical Music” to “Creative Destruction”—on Thursday, August 31 at the Des Moines Art Center. The party starts at 7:30 pm!
