In 1933, visionary philanthropist James Edmundson bequeathed funds to establish the
Des Moines Art Center, which opened to the public in 1948. In this lavishly illustrated talk
on the museum’s history, Amy N. Worthen, curator of prints and drawings and long-time
staff member, looks at some of the personalities who made the Art Center the extraordinary
institution that it is today. She will discuss some of the many people who fulfilled Edmundson’s
vision as well as those who continue to expand upon it. These include the early 20th-century
art activists of Des Moines; the museum’s founders and their philosophies; the directors, their
artistic visions, and the significant works of art they acquired; the trustees, donors and
collectors; the architects; the staff, artists, and teachers; the art center’s members; and the
fantastic volunteers.
