Come on and hear! Come on and Hear!
On the 100th Anniversary of "Alexander's Ragtime Band"
Michael Lasser, music historian and host of National Public Radio’s “Fascinatin’ Rhythm”
After the sheet music for this first song misprinted his name, nineteen-year-old Israel Baline turned
the printer's mistake into his new name because it sounded more American. He became Irving Berlin.
Four years later, he was a professional songwirter with a few hits to his credit - sufficiently well
established for the Friar's Club to sponsor a testimonial dinner in his honor. As his contribution to the
celebration, he wrote a brief untitled instrumental. George M. Cohan, his mentor, urged him to set
lyrics to it and reminded him, as he often did, "The words must jingle, Irvy, the words must jingle."
March 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of that song, "Alexander's Ragtime Band."
