Catalyst State: Iowa Design Weekend is a groundbreaking event organized to showcase Iowa's creative community. Through a combined approach of education and celebration, the bi-annual event brings together student and professional work in fashion, art, architecture, and design, with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and social consciousness.

Support for Catalyst State has been provided by American Institute of Architects, American Institute of Graphic Artists Iowa Chapter, Des Moines Social Club, Divine Flowers by Saley, Hatch Development Group, Jasper Wineries, Out of Box Productions, and Taste! To Go and Catering.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Fashion over Function
Friday, November 13
Hatch Building, 1312 Locust Street
8 pm - Midnight
Doors open at 7:30 pm

Catalyst State: Iowa Design Weekend kicks-off in downtown Des Moines with a multi-media showcase of fashion design and music by DJ Touchnice. The admission price includes wine from Jasper Winery and hors d'oeuvres from Taste! To Go and Catering. Doors open at 7:30 pm.

Art Noir members receive $15 tickets at the door. Non-member tickets are $20 in advance / $25 at the door and are available exclusively at www.IowaTIX.com or 515.277.3727.

After-party at the Des Moines Social Club, 1408 Locust Street, 12 - 2 am.


Creative Conscience

American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) Student Portfolio Review
Art Center Lobby

Designers working in all forms of visual communication are invited to bring their portfolio for a 15-20 minute review with an industry professional. Contact dschmitz@desmoinesartcenter.org or 515.271.0327 to reserve a spot.

Film Screening
12:30 -1:45 pm

Watch a screening of Objectified (2009), a new feature-length documentary directed by the award-winning Gary Hustwit (Helvetica, 2007) about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them.

20 x 2010 / 20 Big Ideas for 2010 and Beyond
2 pm

Attend an afternoon forum for the exchange of cutting-edge ideas and trends in art and design, architecture, and technology. A total of 20 invited and juried practitioners will make brief presentations about their big ideas for the future.

Keynote Presentations
6 pm

Featured speakers include Vincent James and Jennifer Yoos of Vincent James Associates Architects (VJAA) in Minneapolis and multi-disciplinary artist, urban planner, and community activist Theaster Gates.
